Aussie Holiday Homes Top the List

Australia has been ranked among the world’s top destinations for holiday home ownership — but for investors, the real story lies beneath the lifestyle appeal.

A global study by Compare the Market assessed 50 international locations based on affordability, climate, and lifestyle amenities. Australia ranked second overall, outperforming popular European destinations such as Malta and Italy, driven by its strong lifestyle appeal and natural environment.

However, while lifestyle factors may attract buyers, successful property investing requires financial discipline, not emotion.

Compare the Market warns that purchasing a holiday home without a clear income strategy can expose investors to serious financial risks — particularly under new Australian Taxation Office rules. From July 1, properties not genuinely available for rent during peak periods may be classified as leisure facilities, removing access to tax deductions altogether.

The ATO is now using artificial intelligence to identify investors incorrectly claiming deductions, placing greater scrutiny on holiday homes that are rarely rented or primarily used for personal enjoyment.

From a long-term wealth perspective, this reinforces a critical principle: property must function as an income-producing asset, not just a lifestyle choice. Without consistent rental income, the costs, tax implications, and regulatory risks can quickly outweigh perceived benefits.

At Infinite Wealth, we help investors separate lifestyle appeal from investment reality, ensuring every decision supports long-term financial freedom rather than short-term enjoyment.
