Regional Migration Hits New High

Australia is witnessing a notable shift in internal migration patterns, with an increasing number of people opting for regional living over city life. According to the latest Regional Movers Index (RMI) for the June 2024 quarter, there has been a 27% rise in relocations from cities to regional areas compared to the reverse. This trend continues to exceed pre-Covid migration patterns.

Liz Ritchie, CEO of the Regional Australia Institute (RAI), emphasized the significance of this sustained shift. “Regional Australia is now the new frontier, crucial for our net zero transition and long-term prosperity,” she stated.

Although there was a seasonal decline in overall movement, city-to-regional relocations remain 16% above pre-Covid levels, while regional-to-regional moves have increased by 10%. The RMI report, a collaboration between the Commonwealth Bank and RAI, also highlights emerging regional hotspots such as Lake Macquarie and the South Coast of NSW.

Paul Fowler from CBA pointed out that regions like Lake Macquarie are attracting individuals with their appealing lifestyle, essential services, and job opportunities. As regional growth continues, it is essential for governments, industry, and communities to work together to support this trend.
