Australia’s economy is facing substantial pressure from a surge in population and increased public spending, which are exacerbating inflation concerns and keeping the Reserve Bank on high alert. While Treasurer Jim Chalmers has criticized the Reserve Bank’s restrictive monetary policy, the record growth in population and public spending remains a key driver of economic activity.
In the June quarter, Australia’s population grew by 0.65%, driven largely by an influx of international students and temporary visa holders, pushing the annual growth rate to approximately 2.5%. This demographic surge is boosting demand, especially in service exports, despite subdued consumer spending.
Public spending has reached new heights with increased investments in social services, wages, and rebates. This expansionary fiscal policy, highlighted by the Reserve Bank, is contributing to a delayed return of inflation to its target range.
New data indicates that public demand has climbed to 22.5% of GDP, raising concerns about the sustainability of growth. While the Reserve Bank continues to advocate for tight monetary policy, a recent survey reveals that a significant portion of the public attributes rising inflation to government spending, highlighting the complex economic landscape ahead.
