Banks are already slashing rates ahead of the Reserve Bank’s next meeting, signalling opportunity for savvy buyers.
While the RBA won’t meet again until May 20, many experts are tipping further interest rate cuts Australia property investors should watch closely.
In the lead-up to ANZAC Day, eight banks cut fixed rates for new customers, and three reduced variable rates, according to Canstar.
That brings the total to 18 lenders dropping rates in April alone.
All four big banks are predicting the RBA will cut the cash rate in May.
Macquarie Bank now leads with the lowest fixed rate at 5.19% for two- and three-year terms, a move likely to stir investor interest.
Canstar’s Sally Tindall says more lenders are likely to follow.
“We tend to see fixed rate changes ramp up when expectations of an RBA move are high,” she explains. “Another cut in May is very much on the cards.”
Inflation is finally easing, with the latest Consumer Price Index showing headline inflation at 2.4%, and trimmed mean inflation at 2.9% within the RBA’s target for the first time in three years.
