Experienced property analyst Louis Christopher is the latest to confirm that there is no national property boom. Christopher, of SQM Research, says asking prices continue to rise in Sydney and Melbourne, but the picture is not consistent across the country.

Christopher says the number of property listings has fallen in most capital cities. Nationally, the number of listed properties fell 2.8% in April.

“The numbers clearly illustrate there is no national housing boom,” Christopher says.

“But the Sydney market has become the ‘problem child’ for the RBA and it looks like Melbourne is now heading that way as well. In contrast, median asking house prices in Darwin continue to fall with year-on-year comparisons showing a 12-month decline of 3.5%. Perth also recorded declines in house asking prices.”
